A quote that you find inspirational regarding the role that advocacy can have in the lives of young children and their families:
I have many inspirational quotes regarding the role that advocacy can have in the lives of young children and their families but this one is one of favorite “Nothing you do for a child is ever wasted” by Garrison Keillor.
· What inspires and excites you most about your advocacy plan and being an advocate?
The children I work with everyday inspire and excite me most about my advocacy plan and the opportunity to educate parents about the importance of screening and assessment.
· What challenges and/or anxieties do you feel related to engaging in the advocacy efforts you have targeted?
Challenges and/ or anxieties I feel related to engaging in advocacy efforts I have target is trying to meet and take the views of the parents that are involve into consideration that are trying to understand their child needs.
· What do you believe will be most effective in helping you overcome any challenging emotions you may be feeling with regard to presenting and implementing your Advocacy Action Plan?
The most effective in helping me overcome any challenging emotions I may be feeling with regard to presenting and implementing my Advocacy Action Plan is staying focus, have all information in task and continue working gaining positive results from the parents regarding their child's needs.
· How can you encourage others in their advocacy efforts, and how can others encourage you?
The only thing I can say is advocacy is time consuming, but all worth it in making a difference in the children and their family lives. Others can encourage me by giving me tips on how to open parents mind about the importance of screening and assessment.
Hi Wilza,
ReplyDeleteI like your advocacy efforts and I like the fact that your passion to help screening assessment for children be a concern for your center. Many neglect this and have no idea how important this is to the well being and education of the children that are in our care. You already have encouraged me on some of my efforts in education. I have had your insights in many of my classes and have had the pleasure of your insights into many of my teaching efforts. The efforts that inspire you are the children. That is what advocating in early childhood is all about.
Thank you for this inspirational quote, I will keep it in mind. Because we need to all learn the children should be inspired and that they are to inspire the world one day. We need not think of any kind of education as a waste because education can lead our children into a better life for them. They will lead to many others that they seem to pass their energy and knowledge that they have to help the world become better.

Hello Darlene,
ReplyDeleteThank you ma'am! Let me tell you, it's not easy at all because some the parents are in denial about their child's development milestones which I understand but wish they would do something about it while it's still early.
That's the problem I don't think they know or understand the importance of screening and believe me when I tell you I am trying every many strategies to win these parents over to get their child tested. Awww... That's great to hear Darlene. Teaching and working with children is where my heart is and only know I tried by best every single day to make a difference in my children and their family lives and not only they let me know how I have touched their lives they also show me by hugs and saying thank you often.
Yes, your second paragraph is so right and true. Sometimes I wish those of us that work with children feel the same way because till this day I remember my second grade teacher Mrs. Franco because she's a huge impact in my live and again I am trying to do the same for those children I work with in return.
Good Afternoon,
ReplyDeleteYour quote is on target regardless of how children act they are still learning from you. The example in front of them is what they model, I'm glad to read that my teaching and effort to support children and family will not fall unto death ears. However your advocacy effort to stress the importance of screening and assessement is necessary. Some parents don't realize how important screening and assessments and the fact in determine how teacher teach their child and it help monitor their child development socially, emotionally and academically. I'm glad to know that someone such as yourself is taking the lead to on this issue. Working in early childhood education field I have seen parents neglect these necessary components. Moreover the only advice I can give you is to stay firm and know that your efforts are need. I wish you the best...
Hello, Wilza Louis
ReplyDeleteI agree, just like the poem says " Children live what they learn". These little people are always watching you even when it seems like they are not paying attention. Trust me, I have and live with two of them amd work with many of them.
Yes, they do neglect these components, very much so and the excuses I use to get are " I don't want my child to be labeled" or " he or she will grow out of it". I am trying and going at it with full force and thank you, best of luck to you too.
Hello Wilza,
ReplyDeleteIt is nice to know that the children at your workplace inspire you to implement your advocacy plan. I like your idea about the opportunity to educate parents about the importance of screening and assessment because I am advocate of how to get parents involved in their child’s education. Parents need to know that their involvement is important. According to researchers Kathleen Cotton and Karen Reed Wikelund, "the more intensively parents are involved in their children's learning, the more beneficial are the achievement effects. This holds true for all types of parent involvement in children's learning and for all types and ages of students (Cotton and Wikelund, 2001).”

The topic of screening and assessment is a very important one; many parents just do not realize how important that is for a young child. There are so many benefits to early screening and we all know how important it is to do that as soon as possible. Educating them so that they can understand the process will help them and help the children.
ReplyDeleteI think it is so important to try to see the situation from the parent's view. That can be very difficult but often we don't know the entire situation so we second guess or judge their behavior.
I love that you mention more than once that you want parents to understand their child's needs - just remember that you are doing this for a good cause. Good luck!
Hello Ruth,
DeleteYou're right some parents don't realize the importance of screening and assessment. I' am trying to educate them as much as I can to where I would like my site to make it mandatory to have a child screened that is suspected to have a development delay and take it from there.
Right again you are about parent's view but at the same time their child is suffering and time is being wasted. The two most popular points of view I've been getting are “I don't want my child to be labeled" and "He or she is just a little slow, but will catch up". I am a parent as well and I do understand where they are coming from but it's not helping their child. I’m trying my hardest to make them understand that. Thank you Ruth and good luck to you too.

Hello Shawanda,
ReplyDeleteI totally agree with you. To give you an example how important it is for parents involvement in their child education and over all my older daughter which is freshly a 5 years old started kindergarten this year is reading already. Part of the reason being is because I am part of her education by reading to her and her sister daily, ask her questions, answer her questions, work with her at home, communicate with her teacher etc. sadly some parents do not realize how important it is to be part of their child education and their lives. I am just glad and happy to be one of those parents that care, love, help and support my children in every way possible.
